Training is provided by our station training team together with experienced watchkeepers whilst on watch. As a Watchkeeper Under Training you will be guided through various subjects in order to meet the standards required by the NCI. You will also take a radio course and gain a license. Finally, an assessment is made to demonstrate your knowledge of all the required competences before becoming a Certified Watchkeeper. We are a uniformed organisation and it is a requirement that you agree to wear a uniform whilst on duty.
We encourage everyone to learn at their own pace and no trainee is expected to cover a watch without experienced members present. No previous experience is necessary; we value and welcome all keen volunteers. All members of the team are expected to carry out regular watchkeeping duties (at least two watches per month), and are encouraged to attend the Station AGM, training meetings and fundraising events. This also provides members with an opportunity to meet together other than when on watch.
As each station is responsible for meeting their own running costs, fundraising events are vital for their efficient upkeep. NCI voluntary watchkeepers are an important part of the national search and rescue (SAR) fraternity and a vital link in the security of our coastline. NCI Felixstowe has Declared Facility Status and is classed as a SAR asset by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. As part of our team, you can join us in being their eyes along the coast.
